But the Mahabharata is not merely a war epic. It is an encyclopedia of human experience — containing within it the Bhagavad Gita, philosophical treatises, stories within stories, moral parables, legal codes, and spiritual teachings. As the text itself declares: “What is found here may be found elsewhere. What is not found here will not be found anywhere.” The epic explores the grey areas of morality — where duty conflicts with love, where truth conflicts with compassion, and where even the righteous must make impossible choices. It teaches that dharma is not a simple set of rules but a living, breathing principle that must be understood in context. The Ramayana shows us how dharma should be lived; the Mahabharata shows us how dharma is actually lived — in all its complexity.
